More Ways to Measure SEL in New Revision of Out-of-School Time Quality Tool
May 11, 2023
NIOST's research-based and field-tested tools to assess out-of-school-time program quality and youth outcomes now have new ways to measure social emotional learning (SEL)!
Our Survey of Academic and Youth Outcomes Youth Tool (SAYO-Y) has added four new measurement scales through funding from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education:
- Youth feel welcomed and accepted
- Youth perceive positive guidance around behavior
- Youth perception of family experiences
- Sense of Competence in Specials (such as Art, Music, Drama, PE)
Easily measure the outcomes that best align with your program's mission and goals by choosing from these scales as well as SAYO-Y’s existing ones from these four domains: program experiences, sense of competence, future planning and expectations/college and career, or program impacts retrospective.
SAYO is a measurement tool that is part of APAS (A Program Assessment System). The APAS suite of tools helps organizations assess any of 27 youth outcome areas that are scientifically linked to long-term positive youth development and academic and life success. SAYO-Y on its own or within the APAS System has been used by out-of-school-time program leaders, camp directors, supervisors, curriculum and education coordinators, and 21st Century Community Learning Center program administrators.
